Rabat – Morocco’s U‑17 national team coach, Tiago Lima Pereira, says his squad is ready to begin the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on home soil.

With the tournament only days away, he stressed that his players are focused and eager to make a strong start despite limited preparation time.

Speaking yesterday to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF)’s YouTube channel, Pereira explained that the team is fully concentrated on the opening match.

“We are excited to play football and want to begin the competition in the best way possible,” he said.

The coach stressed that his players are only 16 years old, which is why he avoids putting excessive pressure on them.

Instead, the technical staff are working to create a positive environment where the team can perform freely.

Pereira noted that while the team is tactically ready, the main emphasis has been on mental strength and confidence.

Playing at home

Hosting the tournament comes with added responsibility, Pereira admitted. He said the team wants to inspire confidence among fans from the very first game by showing commitment and quality on the pitch. “Step by step, we aim to win and build trust with our supporters,” he added.

After a long season, some players are dealing with minor injuries or fatigue. Pereira acknowledged this but insisted the squad will be fully prepared for the opener.

The medical and technical staff are working to ensure every player is ready to contribute.

While winning matches is important, Pereira stressed that the broader goal is player growth. He wants his squad to become more mature, confident, and tactically aware with each game. “The objective is not only victories but also improvement,” he said.

The tournament’s draw has placed Morocco in Group A alongside Egypt, Tunisia, and Ethiopia. Pereira believes every match will be tough, but his team is determined to approach the competition one game at a time.

He concluded by saying the focus is on consistent performance rather than rushing results, with collective progress being the priority.
