Rabat – Real Madrid president Florentino Perez remains resolute despite a silverware-free campaign, declaring he has no plans to step down and will remain at the presidency until the very end.
Perez shared these remarks during a press conference following today’s Madrid board meeting, acknowledging the collective frustration over the club’s trophyless season.
He defended his legacy despite the club’s underwhelming results over the past two seasons, reminding critics Madrid won seven Champions League trophies and a total of 66 total titles across football and basketball under his leadership.
“We are proud of this club. I will not leave, and I will be the last member to depart Real Madrid,” Perez stated. “The members are the owners; if anyone wishes to run for election, the door is open. Threatening to run is not enough.”
The Madrid president also called for early elections while announcing his reelection bid. “I’ve asked the electoral committee to begin the process of organising elections for the board of directors, of which this Board of Directors will stand as a candidate,” he said.
“I invite anyone who wants to stand for election to do so. I’m standing to defend the interests of Real Madrid’s members. They won’t intimidate me. It gives me a lot of energy.”
The 2025-26 season for Real Madrid ended in failure with no major trophies. The team struggled after changing coaches in the middle of the season, moving from Xabi Alonso to Alvaro Arbeloa.
Although their star striker Kylian Mbappé scored many goals, the team looked rudderless and out of depth as a collective. They crashed out of both the UEFA Champions League and the Copa del Rey uncharacteristically early.
While many critics call for new blood to lead the club out of a two-year mess, Perez’s comments suggest he believes he is still the right man for the daunting job of reclaiming Madrid’s domestic and continental dominance.
