Agadir – Morocco is advancing a strategic partnership with the World Bank Group and the Gates Foundation to strengthen its role as a regional center for pharmaceutical manufacturing and health logistics, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Health
The announcement follows a high-level meeting held today in Geneva between the Minister of Health Amine Tahraoui, and representatives of the two international institutions on the sidelines of the 79th World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization.
According to the ministry, the discussions “served to confirm the main directions of a joint roadmap aimed at strengthening Morocco’s positioning as a regional pharmaceutical and logistics hub.”
The meeting brought together senior representatives, including Monique Vledder, Global Director for Health, Nutrition and Population at the World Bank Group, Giancarlo Francese, representing the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
The ministry stated that the talks mark “a transition to a new operational phase based on the implementation of a structured roadmap designed to reinforce the kingdom’s role as a reference platform in pharmaceutical manufacturing, health product logistics, regional distribution, and healthcare supply chains across the African continent.”
This initiative, the statement added, is part of broader national efforts to strengthen health sovereignty, improve pharmaceutical security, and expand access to medicines and health products, in line with Morocco’s ongoing health sector reforms.
The ministry further emphasized that the discussions highlighted “a shared vision regarding Morocco’s strategic assets,” including its geographic position, logistics and industrial infrastructure, and the ongoing development of its regulatory and legislative framework in the pharmaceutical sector.
These factors, the statement noted, position Morocco to play “a central regional role in supporting healthcare value chains in Africa.”
