Fez – Bill Gates is widely known as the co-founder of Microsoft, one of the world’s most valuable companies, and has been for more than three decades.

After his fortune surpassed $100 billion during the technology boom of the 1990s, Gates gradually stepped away from day-to-day business operations to focus on philanthropy through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Today, the foundation’s charitable work is backed by a trust that manages a public stock portfolio worth nearly $33 billion.

Recent filings show that investment managers sold the remaining shares from Gates’ latest donation of Microsoft stock, leaving nearly 43% of the portfolio concentrated in just two major holdings.

The trust mainly focuses on value investing, favoring large and established companies with strong competitive positions and stable long-term performance.

While some growth stocks remain in the portfolio, they represent only a small share. Microsoft had long been the biggest exception.

The investment strategy also reflects Gates’ personal approach to investing, which has been strongly influenced by Warren Buffett, the former chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway, and one of the foundation’s largest donors.

Despite the recent sale inside the trust, Gates himself still owns around 103 million Microsoft shares valued at nearly $43 billion.

With plans to donate most of his wealth to the foundation over the next two decades, reducing Microsoft’s weight inside the trust appears to be part of a broader diversification strategy.

Even so, Microsoft continues to attract strong investor interest. The company remains one of the leading players in cloud computing and artificial intelligence services, two sectors still seeing rapid global demand.

Analysts also continue to view the stock as relatively attractive compared to its long-term earnings growth.

Berkshire Hathaway remains the foundation’s largest holding

Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares are now the largest investment in the Gates Foundation trust, accounting for roughly 25% of the portfolio.

Buffett has donated large amounts of Berkshire shares to the foundation every summer as part of his annual giving program.

Under the agreement, the foundation must spend the full value of its donations each year, along with an additional 5% of its remaining assets.

That requirement has become increasingly difficult as Berkshire’s market value continues to grow.

Still, investment managers have managed to keep a significant position in the company over the years, even after periodic sales of shares.

Under new chief executive Greg Abel, Berkshire Hathaway reported strong first-quarter results.

Its insurance business recovered after losses linked to California wildfires last year, while the company also showed progress in improving operating margins in its railway division.

The company’s growing cash reserves and stable operating profits continue to strengthen its position as one of the world’s most closely watched conglomerates.

WM holds the second-largest position

The second-largest investment in the foundation’s portfolio is WM, formerly known as Waste Management.

The company represents the type of business often favored by both Gates and Buffett: dominant, stable, and protected by strong barriers to entry.

WM has remained in the Gates Foundation portfolio for decades, with relatively few sales over the years, and now represents around 18% of total assets.

Its competitive strength largely comes from its vast network of waste disposal infrastructure, including hundreds of active landfill sites across the US.

The company also operates medical waste incinerators and other facilities that support its nationwide operations.

The Gates Foundation continues reshaping its investment portfolio, and its strategy remains focused on long-term stability, reliable cash generation, and businesses with durable market advantages.
