Fez – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) has issued an orange-level weather alert warning of high temperatures and locally strong thunderstorms in several parts of the country on Thursday and Friday.
According to the national weather authority, a heatwave is expected to affect a number of southern provinces, with temperatures ranging between 39 and 44 degrees Celsius.
The hot weather is forecast from Thursday through Friday in the provinces and prefectures of Es-Semara, Assa-Zag, Boujdour, Oued Eddahab, Aousserd, and Tata.
The meteorological authority said the rise in temperatures comes as warm air masses continue to move across southern and southeastern regions, creating difficult weather conditions, especially during daytime hours.
Authorities are calling on residents to remain cautious, avoid long exposure to the sun, and stay hydrated as temperatures reach unusually high levels for this period.
In addition to the heatwave, the Directorate warned of locally strong thunderstorms accompanied by hail in several central regions of the country.
The thunderstorms are expected on Thursday between 1:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
The affected provinces include Ifrane, Midelt, Boulemane, El Hajeb, and Khenifra, where rainfall levels could reach between 25 and 30 millimeters in a short period of time.
The storms may also be accompanied by strong winds and temporary local flooding in vulnerable areas.
Weather authorities regularly issue alert bulletins during periods of unstable weather to help local authorities and residents take preventive measures and reduce risks linked to extreme climate conditions.
The latest alert comes as Morocco experiences increasingly contrasting weather patterns between different regions of the country, ranging from intense heat in the south to storm activity in mountainous and inland areas.
Authorities advise residents in the concerned provinces to follow official weather updates and respect safety instructions throughout the alert period.
