Clashes between supporters and police across France led to more than 400 arrests, following Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory over Arsenal, with the celebrations turning violent in several cities.
Thousands of officers were deployed in Paris to contain unrest that disrupted transport services in the capital.
Fireworks and flares were set off in multiple areas, while police used tear gas to separate crowds in central Paris. Several vehicles, businesses and a bus shelter were damaged during the night.
According to authorities, 416 people were arrested in the early hours of Sunday, including 280 in Paris. Seven police officers were injured during the clashes.
The night was also marked by a fatal incident, as a man in his twenties died after crashing his motorbike into concrete barriers installed on a Paris ring road.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the security system as a “very robust, very solid system in place”, but said the violence was “absolutely unacceptable”.
Marine Le Pen also reacted on X, saying: “Only in France does a football club’s victory spark riots.”
“Only in France does everyone feel compelled to lock themselves in their homes on the evening of a victory to avoid being confronted with violence,” she added.
The Champs-Élysées was crowded shortly after the final whistle, with footage showing flares being lit and shopfronts already damaged.
Earlier in the day, clashes also took place near the Parc des Princes, where fans gathered to watch the final on big screens.
PSG players are set to take part in a victory parade on Sunday afternoon, including a route near the Champ-de-Mars by the Eiffel Tower before a reception at the Élysée Palace.
