Casablanca — A light earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale was recorded in northeastern Morocco on Thursday evening at approximately 8:51 p.m. local time, according to seismic monitoring data.

The tremor’s epicenter was located in the Fez-Meknes region, around 19 kilometers west of Guercif and about 42 kilometers east of Taza.

Data published by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre showed that the earthquake was classified as a minor seismic event. Earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered weak and are often felt only by a limited number of people living close to the epicenter.

No casualties, injuries, or material damage were immediately reported following the tremor.

Morocco experiences regular low-magnitude seismic activity due to its geological position between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. Most recorded earthquakes are minor and cause little or no damage, although stronger tremors have occasionally affected different parts of the country.

Thursday’s event was among the latest seismic movements registered in the region. Authorities had not issued any warnings or emergency measures following the quake, and no disruptions were reported in the affected area.
