Marsa Maroc Receives First Large Bulk Carrier at Casablanca Port After Quay Expansion

Fez– The multipurpose terminal operated by Marsa Maroc at the Port of Casablanca has welcomed its first large-capacity bulk carrier following the first phase of a major quay deepening project, marking an important milestone in the modernization of Morocco’s largest port.

The vessel, a 200-meter sugar bulk carrier chartered by Cosumar Group, arrived carrying nearly 55,000 tonnes of raw sugar. 

The operation was made possible thanks to the terminal’s new draft depth of 12 meters, achieved after rehabilitation and deepening works on the quays.

Marsa Maroc said the arrival is the first of its kind at the Port of Casablanca and represents the operational launch of infrastructure upgrades to expand the terminal’s capacity and enable it to receive larger vessels.

“The Port of Casablanca is now opening its doors to a new category of large bulk carriers,” said Khalid Mansour, Director of the Bulk Business Unit at Marsa Maroc. 

He added that 230 meters of quay have already been rehabilitated and deepened to 12 meters, allowing the terminal to accommodate ships with capacities approaching 60,000 tons.

The company plans to continue the project over the coming years. 

Marsa Maroc aims to extend the upgraded quay length to 530 meters by 2028, increasing the terminal’s total handling capacity to more than 8 million tons.

For Cosumar, the first company to benefit from the upgraded infrastructure, the project is already bringing tangible advantages.

According to him, the quay deepening works, combined with operational improvements carried out jointly with Marsa Maroc, now allow the group to charter larger vessels, generating significant port and logistics efficiencies that strengthen its competitiveness.

The arrival of the 55,000-ton sugar carrier offers the first concrete demonstration of the new capabilities of Casablanca’s multipurpose terminal and highlights the immediate impact of investments made to modernize Morocco’s port infrastructure.
