Rabat – Ahead of a Round of 32 meeting between the Netherlands and the Atlas Lions, multiple Dutch figures have warned against underestimating Mohamed Ouahbi’s side.
Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman pushed back against suggestions that Brazil would have been a more difficult opponent.
“They are both strong teams. I don’t see Brazil as stronger than Morocco because they drew against each other in their opening match,” Koeman said earlier this week. “Whoever we face, it will be a difficult game.”
Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk also expressed excitement about the upcoming match, describing Morocco as a dangerous and experienced side.
“I’m really looking forward to the match. These are the kinds of games you want to play as a footballer,” Van Dijk said.
The Liverpool defender added that Morocco remain “a very good team” despite showing “some weaknesses” during the group stage.
For his part, Brighton defender Paul van Hecke predicted an intense encounter both physically and emotionally.
“Morocco? These are the matches you want to play. It’s going to be heated in every sense of the word, and we have to come out of it victorious,” he said.
Midfielder Frenkie de Jong echoed similar sentiments, commending Morocco’s chemistry and cohesion ahead of the knockout clash.
“For me, Morocco is a very strong team. They play very well together and have been together for a long time. I think they are a really good side,” De Jong said.
The Barcelona midfielder’s comments added to a growing sense of caution within the Dutch camp despite confidence surrounding the Oranje’s attacking form.
The Netherlands entered the knockout round after an entertaining campaign that began with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Japan, followed by a dominant 5-1 victory over Sweden and a 3-1 victory over Tunisia.
Morocco, meanwhile, remained unbeaten in Group C after drawing Brazil 1-1, defeating Scotland 1-0, and overcoming Haiti 4-2 to secure qualification.
