Rabat – Morocco’s star Achraf Hakimi has commended teammate Munir Mohamedi, labeling the veteran goalkeeper as the true leader of the national team.
Speaking during an interview on ABtalks, Hakimi emphasized that Mohamedi’s vast experience commands immense respect in the dressing room, noting that every player listens to and follows his guidance.
When asked about the true identity of the Moroccan national team’s leader, Hakimi didn’t hesitate to name the 37-year-old goalkeeper, pointing to his long-standing presence with the Atlas Lions.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender went on to highlight Mohamedi’s extensive international resume, explaining that a player’s influence extends far beyond the pitch.
Hakimi stressed that the goalkeeper’s leadership value remains absolute, whether he is in the starting lineup or supporting the team from the bench.
“He has played many matches, and participated in the World Cup and several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, so I believe he is a leader, even if he isn’t playing, and that is what matters most,” Hakimi said.
“When he speaks, everyone listens to him and respects him, and we also follow him because he has immense experience,” the Moroccan international added.
Hakimi also emphasized the deep respect the squad holds for the veteran’s wisdom, noting that Mohamedi’s status as one of the most senior figures in the dressing room makes his guidance invaluable.
According to the fullback, the entire team willingly rallies behind the keeper whenever he speaks.
“I believe he is the oldest player in the national team, and that is important. When someone with this kind of experience speaks to you for the good of the team, we must listen to him,” he explained.
Mohamedi is part of the 26-man squad led by coach Mohamed Ouahbi for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his third consecutive appearance on football’s biggest stage, where his vast experience serves as a vital anchor for the Atlas Lions.
