Morocco and the Netherlands faced off tonight in a thrilling game, but it was heartbreaking for the Dutch fans as their national team exited the tournament after an outstanding performance for the Atlas Lions

The Netherlands opened the scoring in the 72nd minute through Cody Gakpo after a sudden attack. Despite determined attempts from Noussair Mazraoui and Issa Diop to save the day, the Oranje found the breakthrough.

Morocco found a dramatic and an outstanding equalizer, breathing new life into the Atlas Lions after Issa Diop’s stunning goal. He restored hope for the millions of supporters who stayed loyal, sacrificing sleep and staying up past 4 a.m. to watch the game and cheer on the national team.

Neither team was able to find the winning goal, sending the match into extra time as the battle for a place in the next round continued.

Soufiane Rahimi missed a golden opportunity in the first half of extra time that could have earned him his second goal of the World Cup.

With both teams trying to find the back of the net, neither was able to score during the extra time. Morocco, however, dominated the game with more attacking attempts and clear chances, but failed to convert them into goals. The match was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout, with high hopes that Bono would once again showcase the goalkeeping heroics that made him one of Morocco’s standout stars during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The penalty shootout started roughly for Morocco, with Neil El Aynaoui missing the opening kick. The Netherlands converted their first penalty, but missed their second, allowing Morocco to get back into the shootout. Soufiane Rahimi then scored Morocco’s penalty with a touch of luck, keeping the Atlas Lions alive. The Netherlands failed to convert their fourth penalty, but Achraf Hakimi also missed Morocco’s fourth kick, keeping the tension alive. The Dutch then missed their fifth penalty as Yassine Bounou produced another spectacular save, giving Morocco a golden opportunity to seal qualification. And then it was Ismael Saibari who concluded the game with a spectacular goal against the Oranje.

Highlights of the match

The Atlas Lions kicked off the game with good balance, with the lineup featuring key stars coach Mohamed Ouahbi deployed during Morocco’s group stage.

Noussair Mazraoui, Ayyoub Bouaddi, Ibrahim Diaz, Achraf Hakimi, and Ismael Saibari all started the game.

Mazraoui has been there to the rescue to break the Netherlands’ attacks, especially on the left side. But the Netherlands kept up its provocative pressure on Morocco, which remained resilient and continued to stay focused throughout the first minutes of the match.

The Netherlands played aggressively, with the team keeping possession of the ball and keeping it close to their own net, blocking play.

The Morocco vs. the Netherlands first half started with pressure, intensity, and attempts from both teams to find the net, but not with ease.

Neil El Aynaoui made a huge attempt early in the match that the goalkeeper saved, and it was followed by a great attempt from Achraf Hakimi just minutes later.

Twenty minutes into the game, Morocco succeeded in breaking the Netherlands’ attempts to hamper the flow of the game by only maintaining possession without creating actual chances.

Bilal El Khannouss made a stunning assist in the 28th minute of the game, but it needed a header from the players near the net, including Saibari, who missed it. But that is an assist that will be kept in El Khannouss’ record.

Ismael Saibari missed scoring in a beautiful attempt in the added time before the first half ended.

A few more attempts, especially from Hakimi in the opening minutes of the second half, also made Moroccans hold their breath. If there is anything to remember from this game, despite the missed opportunities, it is the team’s cohesion, balance, and overall performance, with outstanding displays from Azzedine Ounahi, Bilal El Khannouss, Chadi Riad, Noussair Mazraoui, and Ismael Saibari.

Despite the Netherlands’ stunning goal in the 70th minute, Morocco refused to give up and responded with renewed intensity. The Atlas Lions felt the pressure but continued to push forward with several attacking attempts and impressive balance in their play. However, despite creating promising opportunities, they were unable to convert their chances into an equalizer at that point.

It was not until the first minute of the added time in the second half that Issa Diop fired home a powerful equalizer, giving Morocco a dramatic comeback. The goal woke up fans across the country, who erupted in celebration in the middle of the night, just minutes before 4 a.m.

And the penalty shootout spoke for itself.

Atlas Lions football status

The Atlas Lions have been roaring throughout the tournament, earning respect from fans, analysts, and opponents alike with a spectacular campaign from the group stage.

Morocco has become one of the teams that football fans around the world—whether Moroccan or not—have marked on their calendars, much like a Clasico, a blockbuster international friendly, or a major tournament clash between football giants.

The Atlas Lions’ matches have become must-watch events, reflecting Morocco’s growing status in world football.

That recognition was cemented during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, when the Atlas Lions made history by becoming the first Arab and African team to reach the semifinals. Morocco has since shown that the achievement was no coincidence.

The national team has continued to deliver impressive performances, including a remarkable AFCON campaign that ended with CAF declaring Morocco African champions by forfeit following Senegal’s withdrawal.

The current World Cup campaign has only reinforced Morocco’s reputation as one of the world’s most respected and competitive football nations.
