Rabat – Morocco defender Issa Diop was named Man of the Match after producing a decisive performance in the Atlas Lions’ dramatic World Cup win over the Netherlands.
Morocco won the penalty shootout 3-2 after the round-of-32 match finished 1-1 following extra time in Monterrey.
Diop played the full 120 minutes and delivered the moment that kept Morocco’s tournament alive, scoring a powerful header in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.
The Netherlands appeared close to qualifying after Cody Gakpo gave them the lead in the 72nd minute.
Morocco continued pushing forward, however, and their pressure was rewarded just before the final whistle.
Chemsdine Talbi delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Diop rose above the Dutch defense and headed the ball beyond goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The goal forced extra time and completely changed the direction of the match.
Diop’s equalizer was his first senior international goal for Morocco.
The Fulham center-back only began representing the Atlas Lions earlier in 2026 after receiving FIFA approval to change his international allegiance.
His first goal could hardly have arrived at a more important moment.
Without his header, Morocco would have been eliminated from the World Cup. Instead, the Atlas Lions were given another opportunity and eventually completed the victory through the penalty shootout.
Diop celebrated emotionally with his teammates and the large Moroccan support inside the stadium.
His goal also rewarded Morocco for a performance in which they created several chances but repeatedly found Verbruggen in their way.
The Dutch goalkeeper made important saves to deny Ayyoub Bouaddi and Neil El Aynaoui, while Achraf Hakimi also struck the woodwork.
Strong defensive performance
Diop’s contribution was not limited to his goal.
The 29-year-old faced a demanding physical battle against Brian Brobbey and remained involved throughout a long and intense knockout match.
He competed for aerial balls, defended crosses and helped Morocco stay organized as the Netherlands attempted to use the strength of their forwards.
Diop received a yellow card shortly after halftime following a challenge on Brobbey, meaning he had to play the remainder of the match carefully.
Despite that pressure, he remained on the pitch through extra time and continued to provide Morocco with a strong presence in central defense.
The Netherlands scored only once across 120 minutes, with Diop and Chadi Riad working in front of goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to keep Morocco in the contest.
