Rabat – Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has been selected in Opta Analyst’s best XI from the opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The specialized statistics platform included the Lille player among the standout performers after the first set of group-stage matches.
Bouaddi earned his place following his strong display in Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Brazil on June 13.
Despite being only 18 and playing his first World Cup match, the midfielder showed confidence, calmness and maturity against one of the tournament’s strongest teams.
Opta described Bouaddi as possibly the most impressive young player of the opening round, highlighting his control of the midfield during the match.
Bouaddi controls Morocco’s midfield
The Moroccan international recorded 87 touches against Brazil, a total bettered only by Brazil’s two central defenders.
That figure reflected both his influence on Morocco’s build-up play and Brazil’s difficulty in controlling the match in attacking areas.
Bouaddi also completed 60 of his 66 passes, giving him a passing accuracy of 90.7%.
According to Opta, he became the second-youngest player since 1966 to complete at least 50 passes in a World Cup match.
He achieved the milestone at the age of 18 years and 254 days.
His performance showed his ability to receive the ball under pressure, move it quickly and help Morocco play through Brazil’s midfield.
Bouaddi also attempted five dribbles, the second-highest total among Moroccan players behind Azzedine Ounahi, who attempted eight.
World stars join Bouaddi in best XI
Bouaddi was selected in midfield alongside United States international Weston McKennie.
The attack included several of world football’s biggest names, with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland all earning places.
Côte d’Ivoire forward Yann Diomandé was also included after his performance during the opening round.
Opta selected Antonee Robinson of the United States, Australia’s Harry Souttar, Cape Verde’s Roberto Lopes and Panama’s Michael Murillo in defence.
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha completed the lineup after an impressive opening performance.
Growing attention around Moroccan talent
Bouaddi’s World Cup debut has increased the attention surrounding him.
Several leading European clubs have been linked with the Lille midfielder, including Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.
His calm performance against Brazil also earned praise from former players and teammates.
Lille striker Olivier Giroud recently described Bouaddi as mature and confident, adding that Morocco should be happy to have him.
For Morocco, his selection in Opta’s best XI is further recognition of the team’s strong opening display against Brazil.
Bouaddi will now look to continue his form as the Atlas Lions prepare for their remaining group matches against Scotland and Haiti.
