Rabat – Senegal’s journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended heartbreakingly as Belgium secured a dramatic 3-2 victory after extra time in their round-of-32 encounter.
The Lions of Teranga appeared to be heading toward the last 16 after building a commanding two-goal lead through Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr. Belgium, however, produced a remarkable late comeback, with Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans scoring to force the match into extra time.
Senegal’s frustration reached its peak when the referee awarded Belgium a decisive penalty late in extra time. One Senegalese player broke down in tears inside the penalty area, while several of his teammates protested the decision.
Despite the emotional scenes, Senegal remained on the pitch and allowed the match to continue. The moment inevitably brought back memories of the chaotic AFCON final against Morocco, when the Senegalese team temporarily left the field in protest after Morocco were awarded a penalty.

Following that controversy, football authorities reinforced the potential consequences for teams that leave the pitch or cause a match to be abandoned. Under competition regulations, such conduct can result in disciplinary sanctions, including a possible forfeit and the awarding of victory to the opposing team.
This time, Senegal avoided repeating those scenes. Tielemans converted the penalty to complete Belgium’s comeback and bring the African side’s World Cup campaign to an end.
Yet Senegal’s reaction to the decision proved almost as significant as the result itself.
Defeat with dignity
Remaining on the pitch should normally be considered the minimum expected of any football team. Nevertheless, Senegal’s history made this particular moment meaningful.
Their players were disappointed, emotional and only moments away from World Cup elimination. They nevertheless controlled their reaction and allowed the match to reach its proper conclusion.
Senegal will leave the tournament disappointed after surrendering a two-goal lead.
More importantly, their conduct demonstrated that lessons can be learned from past mistakes.
Belgium will continue its World Cup journey, while Senegal will return home. But unlike the AFCON final, the Lions of Teranga departed the pitch only after the referee had blown the final whistle.
This time, despite the heartbreak, Senegal lost with dignity, and the football world can respect them for it.
