Rabat – After Senegal’s 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32, Moroccan social media users flooded the accounts of French-Senegalese actor Omar Sy with references to the now-viral “Justice of God ” comment he made earlier this year during the Africa Cup of Nations controversy.
The phrase dates back to the chaotic ending of the AFCON final between Morocco and Senegal.
In the final minutes of the Afcon final, the referee awarded Morocco a late penalty. Senegalese players erupted in protest, contesting the decision. The scene soon escalated into generalized confusion and disorder inside the stadium.
Several Senegal players temporarily left the pitch following the decision, while reports at the time also described crowd disturbances that injured stadium workers.
CAF later overturned the result and officially declared Morocco African champions.
Despite the controversy surrounding the match, Omar Sy celebrated Senegal’s initial on-field victory by calling it “Justice of God” on camera.
Many Moroccan fans considered the phrase provocative given the circumstances of the final.
Months later, Senegal’s World Cup campaign ended in a similarly theatrical manner.
Belgium were awarded a late penalty during the Round of 32 match before Youri Tielemans completed the comeback that eliminated Senegal from the tournament.
Parallels of the two matches circulated widely online, particularly because both encounters were shaped by late penalty drama and emotional endings.
Moroccan users began reposting Omar Sy’s old video while repeatedly replying with “Justice of God” across social media platforms, describing Senegal’s elimination as ironic karma and a “full-circle moment” after the AFCON controversy.
Sy’s phrase has since become one of the most viral reactions surrounding Senegal’s World Cup exit, reigniting memories of arguably the most controversial moment in the history of African football.
