Rabat – Norway head coach Stale Solbakken has revealed that several of his players have been battling illness ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated World Cup quarterfinal against England, raising fresh concerns over his squad’s fitness.
Norway booked their place in the last eight after eliminating five-time world champions Brazil with a 2-1 victory, powered by a brace from Erling Haaland.
They will now face England, who edged Mexico 3-2 in a dramatic Round of 16 clash to continue their quest for a second World Cup title.
Speaking to reporters, Solbakken acknowledged that illness had affected members of his squad during the tournament, although he expressed optimism that the situation was improving.
“We’ve had a few players who haven’t been feeling well, but things are getting better,” Solbakken said. “It’s not ideal during a tournament, but we’re managing the situation.”
Norwegian media reported that striker Jørgen Strand Larsen is among the players dealing with illness. The forward had already missed Norway’s opening World Cup match against Iraq for the same reason before returning later in the tournament.
Defender Marcus Holmgren Pedersen has also reportedly been affected. He missed the victory over Brazil after suffering from illness and has continued to struggle with a cough and fatigue in recent days.
Solbakken also indicated that assistant coach Kent Bergersen has been unwell, adding to Norway’s health concerns ahead of one of their biggest matches in recent years.
Despite the setbacks, Norway have enjoyed an impressive campaign, defeating Iraq and Senegal in the group stage before resting much of their starting lineup in a 4-1 defeat to France, a decision that allowed key players to remain fresh for the knockout rounds.
Whether the illness issues will affect Norway’s preparations remains to be seen as they aim to reach the World Cup semifinals for the first time in their history.
