Rabat – Former France player Arsene Wenger has mentioned in a podcast that the only team capable of beating Les Bleus in the 2026 FIFA World Cup is Spain because they have the qualities needed.
“If any team is capable of beating France right now, I would say it’s “Spain” because “La Roja” have a better technical level than France” and “a quality of collective play, and a culture of collective play, that nobody else in the world has at the moment,” he said.
Today Spain has the opportunity to prove Wenger right when they face Germany in Friday’s quarterfinal at 8 PM. If they manage to win they will secure a place in the semi-final against France’s national team, to give fans a renewal of the rivalry from the UEFA Euro 2024’s semi-final, when Spain eliminated Les Bleus 2-1 before going on to the final to beat England to lift the European title.
It would also be one of the tournament’s block-buster clashes, where physical strength faces tactics and team unity, to reserve a place in the FIFA World Cup final.
Tactically speaking, Spain has several qualities that could put Didier Deschamps’ side in trouble. France have occasionally left space behind their attacking full-backs during transitions, areas that could be exploited by the pace and dribbling ability of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.
Spain’s patient build-up play and midfield control could also force France to defend for long periods, something Les Bleus have not consistently faced in this tournament.
At the other end of the pitch, Spain have not yet received any goal in their sheets, with their organized back line and disciplined pressing making them one of the competition’s strongest defensive teams.
A victory over Germany tonight would set up the tournament’s biggest tactical showdown.
Can La Roja repeat the 2024 UEFA Europe’s semi-final scenario and qualify at the expense of Les Bleus, or will the French team consider this clash as an opportunity to take revenge on the Spanish team?
