Rabat – Herve Renard has announced the end of his short spell as Tunisia head coach after the Eagles of Carthage were eliminated from the World Cup group stage.
Renard confirmed his departure on Instagram, only 18 days after taking charge of the team.
“My journey comes to an end,” Renard wrote. “Before I leave, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the FTF for allowing me to participate in the World Cup.”
He added that it was “an honour” to wear Tunisia’s colors and live what he described as an unforgettable experience.
Renard was appointed on June 16 after Tunisia sacked Sabri Lamouchi following a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F match.
Lamouchi’s dismissal made him the first coach to be removed after only one match at a World Cup.
The Tunisian Football Federation had hoped Renard’s experience would help the team react quickly.
But the French coach could not change Tunisia’s direction.
Under Renard, Tunisia lost 4-0 to Japan and 3-1 to the Netherlands, ending the group stage without a win.
Tunisia conceded 12 goals in the group stage, setting an unwanted World Cup record.
Renard’s return did not bring a reaction
Renard arrived with a strong reputation in African and international football.
He won the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia in 2012 and Ivory Coast in 2015. He also coached Morocco at the 2018 World Cup and Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup, where his team famously defeated Argentina.
But Tunisia’s situation was already difficult when he arrived.
The team had started the tournament badly, confidence was low, and the defensive problems continued in the final two group matches.
After the 4-0 defeat to Japan, Renard said he felt “ashamed.”
Renard’s departure continues a period of major instability around Tunisia’s national team.
The next Tunisia coach will be the country’s eighth head coach since the start of 2024.
Tunisia is also among several national teams that changed coaches during or after the World Cup, with 13 coaches having either been sacked or left their posts during the tournament.
