Rabat – Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior are preparing for decisive contract talks as a reported disagreement over salary threatens to delay the Brazilian forward’s renewal.
Vinicius remains under contract until 2027, meaning he is approaching the final year of the deal he signed in 2023.
Real Madrid want to resolve the situation before it develops into a prolonged transfer story during the new season.
According to Spanish outlet OKDIARIO, Vinicius is seeking a salary close to $20 million net per season. The club reportedly considers that figure too high because it could disturb the wage structure established by President Florentino Perez and chief executive Jose Angel Sanchez.
Real Madrid already have several highly paid stars, including Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.
The club reportedly wants to reward Vinicius without creating financial tension inside the dressing room or allowing one negotiation to reshape its salary policy.
Despite the disagreement, Real Madrid have not indicated that they want to sell the Brazilian.
AS reported that the two sides have scheduled a meeting for the end of July, with both the club and the player showing a desire to complete an extension before preseason preparations fully develop.
The same report said there is optimism inside Real Madrid that an agreement can eventually be reached.
No agreement yet
The latest reports present two different pictures of the talks.
OKDIARIO describes a significant financial gap, while AS says relations have improved and that both parties are moving closer to an agreement.
No new contract has been officially announced.
Vinicius previously said he was happy at Real Madrid and hoped to renew, describing playing for the Spanish club as a dream.
However, entering the season without an extension would increase pressure on both sides. From January 2027, Vinicius could begin negotiating a free transfer with clubs outside Spain unless he signs a new deal.
Mourinho begins new Real Madrid era
The negotiations come as Jose Mourinho prepares to begin his second spell as Real Madrid coach.
The club officially appointed Mourinho on a three-year contract running until June 2029. He is due to take charge when preseason begins on July 13.
Mourinho will expect Vinicius to remain fully focused as he builds his team for the 2026-27 season.
The Brazilian remains one of Real Madrid’s most important attacking players, but the new coach will also have to manage a squad containing Mbappe, Bellingham and several other major names.
Vinicius is also expected to take on greater leadership responsibilities, with AS reporting that he will become the club’s second captain.
