Rabat – FIFA has paid tribute to Argentine player Julian Alvarez after his match-winning performance against Switzerland in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.
Argentina took a 2-1 lead against Switzerland after an extra-time goal from Álvarez to secure a place in the semifinals.
Despite suffering from an ankle injury, by the time the knockout stages began, Alvarez had restored his outstanding performance, the one Argentina knew they could rely on.
“I feel like I am improving; hopefully, towards the end, it will be even better,” Alvarez said. “We have to continue on this path, trying to improve. The team is very good, and we are proud,” he added.
FIFA describes Álvarez as “one of the best forwards in the world and one of Argentina’s national heroes.” He was the hero as Argentina edged Switzerland 3-1 in extra time to reach the World Cup semi-finals.
The forward’s brilliant long-range goal in the 112th minute unlocked a stubborn defense, capping off a tireless 120-minute performance.
Argentina will face England on Wednesday, July 15, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
