Rabat – Peru’s President-elect Keiko Fujimori has announced that her incoming government pledges to support Morocco’s territorial integrity and its sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
Fujimori made her remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with Morocco’s ambassador to Peru, Amin Chaoudri.
Chaoudri held the meeting with the President-elect to convey a congratulatory message from King Mohammed VI following her election.
The future Peruvian government reiterated its commitment to supporting Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces, the President-elect’s office said.
Fujimori also backs UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which recognizes Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a genuine political basis for resolving the regional dispute over Western Sahara.
In his message, King Mohammed VI extended his warm congratulations to Fujimori for the trust the Peruvian people placed in her, and welcomed the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.
King Mohammed VI also expressed his determination to work closely with the Peruvian president to give fresh momentum to bilateral ties and elevate them to a multidimensional partnership.
Peru suspended diplomatic relations with the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in 2023.
Citing that the decision is in accordance with the “rules of international law,” the Foreign Ministry of Peru reiterated its willingness to continue supporting all efforts aimed at achieving a “just, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political solution by all parties to the Western Sahara dispute.”
Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed satisfaction with Peru’s decision to suspend ties with the SADR, stating that the position reinforces the “positive momentum experienced by the Kingdom’s territorial integrity file under the impetus of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.”
Morocco’s Sahara dossier continues to receive backing from the international community, with Permanent Ambassador to the UN Omar Hilale recently estimating that 130 countries back the Autonomy Plan.
