Rabat – Morocco has claimed its first-ever gold medal at the World Taekwondo World Cup Team Championships after defeating Russia in the women’s team final on Tuesday in Chuncheon, South Korea.
The historic triumph marks Morocco’s maiden title in the competition and adds another landmark achievement to the country’s growing reputation in international taekwondo.
The championship-winning squad featured Khoulal Merieme, Ennams Fatima-Zahra, Nada Laaraj, and Amina Dehhaoui, who combined to produce a flawless knockout campaign on the tournament’s second day.
Morocco opened the elimination rounds with a victory over Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals before overcoming Thailand in the semi-finals to book a place in the gold-medal match.
In the final, the Moroccan quartet defeated Russia to secure the country’s first women’s team world title.
Russia finished with the silver medal after an impressive campaign of its own. Represented by Alisa Soshnikova, Margarita Agrofenina, Iuliia Kudriavtseva, and Mariia Federa, the team eliminated hosts, top seeds, and defending champions South Korea in the quarter-finals before defeating Iran to reach the final.
Iran secured the bronze medal after defeating Thailand in the third-place match. The Iranian team consisted of Hasti Mohammadi, Fatemeh Ahmadi, Yalda Valinejad, and Baran Nemati.
China and India completed the eight-team field in the women’s competition.
Morocco’s victory represents a significant breakthrough for the nation’s taekwondo program, highlighting the steady progress of Moroccan athletes on the international stage and delivering one of the country’s biggest team achievements in the sport.
The 2026 World Taekwondo World Cup Team Championships conclude on Wednesday with the mixed team competition, bringing the curtain down on this year’s tournament in Chuncheon.
