Rabat – Fights and violence erupted among Argentina and England fans on Wednesday following the World Cup semifinal showdown.

Wednesday’s World Cup semifinal in Atlanta ended in heartbreak for England. Messi set up two late goals. Argentina won 2-1. But the drama did not stop on the pitch.

Fights broke out near the stadium after the final whistle. Police made multiple arrests, according to reports.

Officers stayed on site for around two hours to calm the crowd following the incident.

Trouble started near the stadium outside the Hudson Grille, a bar popular with England fans. Tensions rose as Argentina supporters walked past, celebrating. Police in tactical gear, some carrying rifles, moved in to restore order.

One witness called it a brief, minor skirmish. He said police regained control quickly.

A rivalry loaded with history.

The rivalry carried extra weight. The two nations’ record includes the Falklands War. Inside the stadium, tension was already high. Fans of both sides booed the other’s anthem. Argentina supporters were also reportedly taking a banner from England fans that made a claim over the Falkland Islands.

Unrest spreads back home

Scuffles were also reported back in England. Videos on social media showed fighting in Birmingham, London, and New York as fans clashed over the result.

Despite the unrest, organisers say the tournament has seen few major incidents overall.
