Casablanca – Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia will not renew his contract after the Belgian Football Federation confirmed his deal will expire on July 31, ending an 18-month spell in charge of the Red Devils following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Aged 62, the former coach of Lille, AS Roma, Marseille and Lyon took over the Red Devils in February 2025, succeeding Domenico Tedesco.
“We sincerely thank Rudi Garcia and his staff for their dedication, professionalism and commitment over the past 18 months, and wish them every success in the future.” the federation said.
“Rudi Garcia has undoubtedly contributed to the rehabilitation of the Red Devils. He was appointed coach in a difficult sporting and financial context,” noted the federation’s statement.
Under Garcia’s leadership, Belgium reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, where they lost 2-1 to Spain, who were crowned champions on Sunday against Argentina.
The Belgians held their own for a long time against the Spanish, before being crucified by a goal from Mikel Merino at the end of the match.
This was the only goal Spain conceded in eight World Cup matches.
Garcia achieved his main objectives by taking over a team in crisis: keeping them in Division A of the Nations League in March 2025 against Ukraine (3-0 in the return leg after a 3-1 defeat in the first leg), and qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
