Romania has joined a growing list of countries that backs Morocco’s genuine autonomy plan as the only viable political basis to end the dispute over Western Sahara

In a message addressed to King Mohammed VI, Romania’s President Nicușor Dan stated: “We note that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty can constitute a viable solution.”

Romania further emphasized that it “considers the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 to be the most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic basis for achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.”

A statement from Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates conveyed Romania’s position, stating that the new position follows “a thorough analysis of developments concerning the Sahara issue, a matter of major importance for the Kingdom of Morocco.”

President Danrecalled that “Romania was among the first states to adopt a position supporting the Kingdom of Morocco on the Sahara issue and welcomed Your Majesty’s efforts in 2022,” adding that his country “considers that the current context provides the necessary framework for the evolution of its national position, in full accordance with its European and global commitments.”

Around 30 European countries, including 24 European Union member states, along with more than two-thirds of UN member states across all regions of the world, now actively support this momentum.

Meanwhile, more than 130 countries now support the autonomy initiative, according to Omar Hilale, Morocco’s permanent ambassador to the UN.
