Spain and Argentina, who met in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in North America, are reportedly likely to clash again this year in the long-awaited Finalissima. The game is expected to take place at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium in November of this year, according to reports.
The Finalissima was originally expected to bring together the champions of Europe and South America before the World Cup at an earlier date, but circumstances prevented the match from taking place. Now, following Spain’s triumph over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, reports suggest the fixture may finally be back on the calendar.
The Finalissima was expected to take place on March 27 in Qatar. However, the fixture was ultimately cancelled after growing security concerns in the Middle East complicated travel and event planning. Ongoing regional political tensions made hosting the match increasingly difficult, forcing organizers to reconsider their plans.
According to DSports 103.1 FM, the confederations could reach an agreement for Spain and Argentina to face off in the pending showdown that pits the current UEFA European Championship champion against the current CONMEBOL Copa América champion, at Qatar’s Lusail Stadium in November of this year.
TNT Sports Argentina also reported that FIFA is showing strong determination to hold the Finalissima between Spain and Argentina within this year.
One of the questions surrounding the Finalissima is whether legend Lionel Messi will continue representing Argentina after completing what many believe was his last dance. If Messi announces his retirement from the national team, the weight of the clash between Spain and Argentina could certainly diminish.
