Spain clinched a 1-0 extra-time victory in New Jersey on Sunday, capitalizing on Fernandez’s red car that further complicated life for an already dominated and out of steam Argentina team.
Fernandez’s late dismissal for two bookings in regulation time left his side struggling to hold on during the grueling final period.
A warning sign came earlier when Fernandez was booked for talking back to the referee. Late in regular time, he made a heavy challenge on Pau Cubarsi, leaving the official no choice but to send him off.
Rather than addressing the final’s chaotic end, the Chelsea midfielder chose to focus on the team’s commitment over the years in a social media statement, sharing a broader perspective on their effort.

As FIFA completes its investigation, Fernández and his teammates now await the final verdict. While penalties may still be coming, the midfielder has made it clear that he stands by his team and their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey.
