Meknes – Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that Frenkie de Jong has torn the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

While the club has not given a clear timeline, the Dutch midfielder will miss several weeks, though he will not need surgery.

“Tests carried out on first-team player Frenkie de Jong have confirmed a tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee,” the club stated on Thursday.

“It has been agreed that the player will continue with conservative treatment under the supervision of the club’s medical staff. His progress will be monitored over the coming weeks.”

Although granted extra rest after the World Cup, De Jong showed up early to Barcelona’s Joan Gamper training complex last Monday. Instead of joining regular preseason medicals, he went to get his troubled right knee evaluated.

Following a final round of medical tests, the club confirmed the diagnosis and announced that De Jong will now focus on his recovery, facing a few weeks out of action.

The 29-year-old Dutchman played through the 2026 FIFA World Cup with his knee heavily bandaged before the Netherlands was knocked out by Morocco on penalties in the round of 32.

Addressing the medical update, the Dutch midfielder shared a personal message about his progress.

“The injury was more serious than initially determined. Thankfully, ‌at this stage there is no need for surgery, and I am now fully focused on my recovery,” De Jong posted on Instagram.

De Jong will now begin the season in the treatment room, but Barcelona remains confident his recovery will go as planned so he can rejoin the squad soon.
