Agadir – Morocco has been elected to the Administrative Council of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) for the 2027-2031 term, advancing the country’s digital cooperation, telecommunications, and artificial intelligence across Africa.
The election took place during the 26th Conference of Plenipotentiaries (CPL 2026) of the ATU, held in Abuja, Nigeria, from July 16 to 24, according to a statement from Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform.
The ministry said the election reflects “the renewed confidence of the Member States in the Kingdom’s contribution to African cooperation based on solidarity, sharing of expertise and co-development, in order to build an integrated, resilient and inclusive African digital space.”
The ministry noted that Morocco’s participation in the conference was in line with the King Mohammed VI vision to strengthen South-South cooperation and support the digital integration of the African continent.
A high-level Moroccan delegation, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), the Digital Development Agency (ADD), and the Moroccan Embassy in Abuja, took part in the conference and preparatory meetings.
During the event, Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to promoting digital infrastructure, telecommunications, and artificial intelligence as “strategic drivers for accelerating the continent’s economic and social transformation.”
The delegation also pointed to the country’s ongoing digital initiatives, including the Morocco Digital 2030 strategy, the “AI Made in Morocco” roadmap, and the national cybersecurity strategy for 2030.
In addition, Morocco showcased several initiatives open to African countries, including the JAZARI Institutes network, the Digital Hub for Sustainable Development (D4SD) developed in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Igoudar Numérique Dakhla project, which aims to strengthen African capabilities in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data centers, and digital services.
Founded in 1977, the African Telecommunications Union is the African Union’s specialized agency for telecommunications and information and communication technologies.
It works to strengthen cooperation among member states, harmonize policies and regulatory frameworks, and promote common African positions in international telecommunications forums, particularly within the International Telecommunication Union.
