Rabat – While visiting the southern Moroccan city of Laayoune today, US Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan reiterated Washington’s unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
Buchan was part of a high-level US delegation that traveled to Morocco’s Western Sahara region Laayoune. The trip was marked by the signing of an agreement between USTDA and Moroccan-based joint venture ORNX Laâyoune 1 SASU (ORNX) to fund a pre-front-end engineering and design (FEED) study for a large-scale green ammonia production plant in Morocco’s southern provinces.
“Our partnership will leverage the best of Morocco and the United States – Morocco’s beauty, work ethic, and abundant natural resources with American innovation,” Buchan said. “This partnership will result in prosperity – for Morocco, for the United States, and for the people of the Moroccan Sahara. Together, we will invest in a brighter future for both of our nations.”
He added that the partnership will result in prosperity for both countries, benefiting locals in the southern provinces.
Referencing the newly announced decision by Morocco to name the major Dakhla-Tiznit expressway after Donald Trump, the ambassador said: “America is in the Moroccan Sahara.”
He said this decision comes to honor Trump’s commitment to peace in Morocco, which is now strengthened by today’s agreement marking a historic financing of an American-led project in the southern provinces.
“You will see the best of what America offers. Cutting-edge technology. Advanced engineering. Private sector investment into the community. And jobs,” he added, concluding his speech with the famous “God Bless the United States” and “God bless Morocco.”

Buchan’s remarks came after President Donald Trump’s Truth Social post on Sunday, in which he declared Morocco will name the just completed, highly strategic 1,055-kilometer highway to the country’s southern provinces after the American president. Trump thanked the Moroccan monarch for the gesture of recognition, stating he is looking forward to traveling the full length of the magnificent expressway “soon.”
Following Trump’s message, Buchan described King Mohammed VI as a true partner for peace and reaffirmed Trump’s unwavering commitment to stand with Morocco for a “Moroccan Sahara defined by peace, regional stability, and prosperity for generations to come.”
The US recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in 2020, a decision that came following unwavering backing of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan.
Now, Washington sees the Moroccan proposal as the only serious and credible political framework able to put an end to the dispute over Western Sahara.
