Rabat – Morocco international Nayef Aguerd is reportedly nearing a move to Qatari champions Al Sadd, as Olympique de Marseille continues efforts to reshape its squad ahead of the new season.
According to FootMercato, negotiations between the two clubs are at an advanced stage, with the proposed deal structured as a paid loan worth €4 million (MAD 43 million), accompanied by an automatic purchase option of €11 million (MAD 118.2 million).
The agreement would allow Marseille to recover a total of €15 million (MAD 161.2 million) if the transfer is completed.
Aguerd, who joined the French club only last summer, remains under contract until 2030, but has nonetheless emerged as one of the players Marseille is willing to part with as it seeks to reduce its wage bill and improve its financial position.
FootMercato reports that the Ligue 1 side had initially hoped for a permanent transfer that would immediately bring in funds. However, after finding the market more difficult than expected, Marseille is now reportedly prepared to accept the loan structure Al Sadd proposed.
The move is not yet complete, with the report adding that an agreement still needs to be reached with the Moroccan defender over personal terms.
Aguerd has also attracted interest from other clubs during the transfer window. FootMercato previously reported that his former club Rennes explored the possibility of bringing him back, but discussions failed to progress.
The 30-year-old center-back has earned 64 caps for Morocco and remains one of the Atlas Lions’ most experienced defenders.
Neither Marseille nor Al Sadd has officially commented on the reported agreement.
