Rabat – Coach Jorge Vilda said Morocco can be proud of its competitive women’s team, which performed at the highest level throughout WAFCON.
Vilda made his remarks during a post-match press conference after Morocco’s defeat against Algeria in the third-place game.
Algeria secured the bronze medal after beating Morocco 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in the bronze-medal match.
Following the defeat, Vilda said Morocco’s women’s team demonstrated the progress it made through the advanced stages it reached, including two consecutive finals in the previous editions of the WAFCON and the round of 16 at the World Cup.
He said the players made great efforts during the tournament, demonstrating a high level during the tournament—praising the women’s team’s performance—particularly the low number of goals conceded during their matches.
“Our wish was to finish third, but the match was decided on penalties, despite the convincing performance of the players, who dominated the game,” Vilda said.
He lauded Morocco’s performance within the match, but it did not come with a positive outcome.
For Vilda, the important thing is to continue working to address shortcomings and approach upcoming challenges with confidence.
Morocco’s women’s team made spectacular performances, starting in the WAFCON and strengthening its position.
The Atlas Lionesses’ performance led them to secure a spot for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Morocco defeated South Africa 2-1 to seal a second consecutive tournament berth.
