Rabat – Spain has formally asked the European Union to unlock emergency funding as Ceuta continues to deal with the consequences of the recent migration crisis.
According to Europa Press, the request seeks financial support for stronger border protection, security infrastructure, and expanded reception capacity in the Spanish enclave, with particular attention to the needs of unaccompanied minors.
The European Commission confirmed that it had received Madrid’s formal request. A Commission spokesperson told Europa Press that Brussels had maintained close contact with Spanish authorities since the beginning of the crisis and would now assess Spain’s needs before determining the amount of funding it could provide.
EU funds to support Ceuta’s reception system
Madrid’s request goes beyond border security. Spain also wants additional resources to strengthen reception facilities and ensure adequate accommodation and assistance for migrants who remain in Ceuta.
The situation has placed particular pressure on facilities for unaccompanied minors, who require specialized accommodation and care.
Brussels had already indicated that Spain could draw on the EU’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) to help cover reception and assistance costs. However, access to the emergency resources required a formal request from the Spanish government.
With Madrid’s request now officially submitted, the European Commission will assess the situation and determine the level of assistance that can be released.
Brussels offers support from EU agencies
The Commission has also offered Spain additional operational assistance through Frontex, Europol, and the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA), subject to the agencies’ available capacities.
According to Europa Press, this support could complement the financial assistance by providing Spain with additional operational resources as it manages the pressure on Ceuta’s border and reception system.
Madrid must also formally request the deployment of these EU agencies’ resources.
The Spanish appeal places Ceuta’s migration situation firmly on the EU’s agenda, with Brussels now set to assess the immediate financial needs of the enclave and the wider operational support Spain may require.
