Rabat – Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has opened up about the personal challenges of fame, revealing that he sometimes wishes he could enjoy ordinary activities without being recognized by people around him.
Speaking to Jorge Valdano on Movistar+’s Universo Valdano, the 19-year-old explained that his growing popularity has changed the way he experiences everyday life in Barcelona.
Yamal said people often imagine that his financial success allows him to enjoy a lifestyle they can only dream of, but he sometimes sees their lives differently.
“It always happens to me when I’m walking around Barcelona. Maybe I’m going to buy clothes, and people say, ‘I wish I were Lamine and could buy whatever I wanted,’” he said.
“For me, it’s completely the opposite,” the Spanish international added.
Rather than focusing on the advantages of his career, Yamal said he misses being able to enjoy simple moments in public without drawing attention.
“I wish I were you and could sit down and have something to drink on this street in peace,” he explained.
He also expressed a desire to spend time among people without constantly being recognized.
A different side of Yamal’s rapid rise
The comments offer a personal perspective on the attention surrounding Yamal, who became one of Barcelona’s most recognizable players while still a teenager.
Movistar+ described the conversation as an opportunity for the young forward to discuss both his competitive ambitions and his experiences since breaking into Barcelona’s first team.
During the same interview, Yamal spoke confidently about his standing in world football, naming himself and Kylian Mbappé as the two players he considers the best in the game. He also discussed his ambition to win the Ballon d’Or.
While many people associate his success with wealth and freedom, Yamal explained that one of the things he would most like to experience is something much simpler: being able to walk through Barcelona and enjoy a quiet moment without attracting attention.
