Rabat- Morocco and Spain, two friendly and neighboring countries, are driven now more than ever by a firm will to develop and diversify their relations of partnership at all levels, said, on Monday in Rabat, foreign minister Salaheddine Mezouar and Spanish peer Alfonso Dastis.

“Spain and Morocco have exemplary relations at all levels and our intention and determination is to deepen them and further them in the future,” Dastis said in a statement to the press following a meeting with Mezouar.

Dastis, who is paying his first official visit to Morocco, lauded on this occasion the excellent political ties between the two parties, assuring that his country sees to it to further develop them through the intensification of contacts and bilateral meetings.

The goal is to discuss in a friendly and permanent way the challenges facing not only the two countries, but also the whole region, he said, adding that his meeting with Mezouar was an opportunity to address issues related to bilateral and multilateral relations.

Dastis seized this occasion to highlight efforts made by both countries to develop political, social and economic ties in a difficult juncture, recalling that these efforts helped Morocco to become Spain’s 2nd non-EU trade partner.

On the multilateral aspect, he underlined that his country has always stressed the pressing need to deepen the Advanced Status granted to Morocco.

He also said that Morocco is a model in terms of managing political and social issues south of the Mediterranean, notably his role in solving the Libyan crisis. For his part, the Moroccan minister said the two sides have managed sensitive matters as immigration and security in the region and succeeded in finding adequate mechanisms and methods to address such challenges thanks to shared trust.

On its partnership with the EU, Mezouar said that the Kingdom will continue its partnership with the Union, but will refuse that the agreements it has signed be called into question in a way or another.

The meeting was attended by top officials from the Moroccan and Spanish foreign ministries, in addition to Spanish ambassador in Morocco Ricardo Diez-Hochleitner and Moroccan ambassador in Spain Fadel Benyaich.
