Taroudant – The Moroccan post office, Barid Al Maghrib, released new postage stamps featuring Moroccan well-known historical figures.

The new postage stamps, by which the post office aims to pay tribute to the country’s patrimony, display photos and names of people who shaped Moroccan history thanks to their remarkable contributions during the colonial period, as well as in sports, the arts and politics.

The post office said this initiative aims “to perpetuate the memory of a number of Moroccan historical figures that marked the history of the Kingdom.”

Approximately 100,000 postage stamps were issued, selling each for MAD 3.75, the post office noted.

The five historical figures featured on the new commemorative stamps are Abdelkrim Al Khattabi, Moha Ouhammou Zayani, Ahmed Tayeb El Alj, Larbi Benmbarek, and Ahmed Balafrej.

Abdelkrim Al Khattabi was a Riffian political and military leader, remembered for his fierce resistance against the French and Spanish colonization of the Rif, a large area in northern Morocco.

Abd el-Krim, whose guerrilla tactics were efficient fighting strategies that influenced Ho Chi Minh, Mao Zedong, and Che Guevara, stands as an example of bravery and patriotism.

Moha Ouhammou Zayani was a military figure who played an important role in the history of Morocco.

Zayani was best known for his heroic leadership in the Battle of El Herri, between France and the Berber Zaian Confederation on November 13, 1914 during the French protectorate in Morocco.

Ahmed Tayeb El Alj was a Moroccan actor and ‘zajal’ poet who helped shaping Moroccan culture. After his death in 2012, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI paid tribute to El Alj in 2013 and called him an “emblematic figure” of Morocco’s cultural scene.

Larbi Benbarek was a high profile Moroccan football player recognized as the ‘first successful African player in Europe’. He was born in 1914 and died in 1992.

Ahmed Balafrej was the Prime Minister of Morocco between May 12, 1958 and December 2, 1958. He was born in 1908 and died in 1990.
