Rabat –Franco-Moroccan journalist at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Zineb El Razhoui, claimed the right to blasphemy at a Montreal news conference Monday.

In a visit organized by a pro-secularism group, “Collectif citoyen pour l’égalité et la laïcitéIslam,” the Moroccan journalist said Islam must accept the sense of humor and Muslim secularists.

“Islam needs to submit to secularism and it also needs to get a sense of humour,” she said.

According to the journalist, Charlie Hebdo’s trajedy has shown the need to defend secularist values including the right to blasphemy.

“Secularism as far as I know, is the only way to permit everyone to live in the same society, even if people are different.” said El-Rhazoui.

“We are civilized when one has the right to freedom of expression, which also includes the right to blasphemy and not be subjected to the limitations imposed on us by religions,” she noted.
