Rabat – During a charged visit to the flood-hit town of Paiporta in Valencia, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain were met with hostility from residents upset with the Spanish government’s inadequate response to the recent devastating floods.
Photographs from the scene depict a tumultuous atmosphere as mud and debris were thrown at the royal couple, reflecting the community’s deep-seated anger.
Many of these images show King Felipe VI navigating the streets with objects and mud soaring behind him, while another captures Queen Letizia with dried mud smeared across her face.
The visit occurred as Spanish authorities dealt with the devastating aftermath of flooding that has resulted in at least 214 fatalities—211 in the Valencian Community, along with additional losses in Castilla La Mancha and Andalusia.
The torrential rains that began earlier in the week triggered flash floods, destroying bridges and submerging towns, leaving many residents without access to essential resources such as water, food, and electricity.
As King Felipe VI walked through the town, he was met with shouts of “murderer” from the crowd. Other protesters exclaimed, “You have arrived four days late,” reflecting the widespread anger over the perceived delay in government action.
In a related development, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was evacuated from the area as the situation of unrest continued to unfold. The royal visit not only drew attention to the tragic loss of life but also pointed to the critical need for an effective disaster response in the wake of such natural disasters.
Spain has received support from several countries, including Morocco, which has offered condolences and expressed a willingness to send rescue teams as well as necessary assistance if needed.
