Rabat – Princess Lalla Hasnaa, joined by French First Lady Brigitte Macron, inaugurated the Royal Theater of Rabat today, a landmark project designed to enrich the cultural landscape of Morocco’s capital, known as the “City of Light.”

The ceremony was part of the French First Lady’s duties as part of Macron’s ongoing State visit.

After unveiling a commemorative plaque, Princess Lalla Hasnaa and Brigitte Macron received a presentation on the theater’s interior architecture before touring its various facilities.

As a key element of Rabat’s development program, the Royal Theater looks to solidify the cultural infrastructure throughout the country while elevating Morocco’s cultural presence on the global stage.

Situated in the heart of the Bouregreg Valley, near the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum, the Royal Theater symbolizes Rabat’s cultural and artistic renewal.

It aims to invigorate the country’s cultural scene by promoting a modern approach to Moroccan art and celebrating the nation’s creative potential.

The princess and First Lady were welcomed by a host of dignitaries, including Fouzi Lekjaa, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance; Governor Mohamed Yacoubi; Regional Council President Rachid El Abdi; Rabat City Council President Fatiha El Moudni; and various other officials.

Developed by the Agency for the Development of the Bouregreg Valley and designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid, the Royal Theater covers 7.1 hectares with a built area of 25,400 square meters. Its design integrates seamlessly with the Bouregreg Valley landscape, capturing the site’s dynamism.

The theater features a variety of well-distributed spaces. Accessibility is a priority, with monumental staircases, walkways, elevators, and pathways designed to ensure smooth mobility for all visitors.

It also boasts an auditorium that can accommodate over 1,800 spectators, distinguished by its unique geometric design that enhances acoustics. This versatile venue is suitable for a wide array of artistic performances in the realm of theater, dance, ballet, opera, musicals, and symphonic concerts.

Designed as a premier venue, the auditorium features acoustic qualities that meet the highest international standards. The theater also includes a second performance hall with 250 seats, designed to accommodate diverse cultural events.  Its exterior features an amphitheater with a capacity of 7,000, intended for festivals and large-scale events.

On Monday, Macron arrived in Morocco for a three-day state visit, joined by his wife and a sizable delegation.

On the first day, Morocco and France signed 22 new agreements spanning various sectors, including transportation, energy, and cultural cooperation.

This morning, he delivered a keynote address at the Moroccan Parliament, covering several key topics, including Morocco’s territorial integrity, the energy sector, education, security, among others.
