El Jaddida, Morocco – Being the poorest in the neighborhood, Romania and Bulgaria were given a restricted membership within the European Union in 2007, a membership that restricts migrants from work and claiming benefits for the first 7 years within the union for fear of the huge exodus of Romanian and Bulgarian migrants.
Greece’s rotating 6-month presidency of the European Union, which kicked off today, was inaugurated by lifting restrictions over Romania and Bulgaria, a decision that will introduce fresh blood within the EU and leave Greece’s touch on EU’s policy.
There are speculations that Greece, which has been struggling to get over its debt-crisis since 2009, might go default and leave EU membership, which is considered one of the reasons behind its debt-crisis.
Wealthy EU members fear the exodus of Romanian and Bulgarian migrants, thus they implemented different working conditions to limit the number of unskilled migrants.
For instance, Romanian and Bulgarian migrants are required work permits by Belgium, the Netherlands and France and an “Accession Worker Card” by Britain.
