Rabat — Cooperation between Morocco’s security and customs services on Saturday enabled police to successfully conduct major drug busts. Police  seized more than 72 kilograms and 180 grams of cocaine in two separate security operations at the Tangier Med port and the El Guerguerat border crossing, south of Dakhla

The first operation took place at the El Guerguerat border crossing, in which police seized 197 blocks of cocaine, weighing a total of 55.95 kilograms.

The drugs were carefully hidden inside a truck carrying international cargo reportedly from a sub-Saharan African country. Police arrested the vehicle’s driver, who is 55 years old.

During the second operation at the Tangier Med port, police and customs authorities discovered 14 blocks of cocaine, weighing a total of 16.23 kilograms, on a shipping container coming from a Latin American country.

Moroccan police opened an investigation to identify all involved in the attempted drug trafficking, including the carriers who were accomplices in getting the drugs to the final destinations.

The investigation is being conducted alongside  Interpol offices in the countries linked to the route the drug shipment traveled.

This bust is one part of the efforts by Moroccan security services against drug trafficking.

The General Directorate of National Security said in its annual report last year that security services processed 99,513 cases and arrested 130,212 individuals, including 305 foreigners, for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking cases.

In these drug trafficking operations, police seized 81 tons and 175 kilograms of cannabis, a 17% decrease compared to the year prior.

Police also seized nearly two tons of cocaine and two loads of heroin, amounting to six kilograms and 880 grams respectively.

Furthermore, security services confiscated shipments of psychotropic substances, amounting to 1.2 million tablets, which included ecstasy.
