Rabat – Israel launched a series of airstrikes on targets within Iran early this morning. The attack comes nearly a month after Iran fired a barrage of missiles at Israeli cities.
The Israeli military confirmed the operation, stating that it had the “right and duty” to respond to Iran’s aggression. A spokesperson for the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) emphasized that Israel’s defensive and offensive capabilities were fully mobilized.
Iranian state media reported explosions in western Tehran, though the extent of the damage remains unclear. Such a move could provoke a more severe Iranian response, analysts and observers have warned.
Some reports suggest that military bases in the west and southwest of the Iranian capital were targeted. Additionally, Syrian state media confirmed Israeli airstrikes on military sites in central and southern Syria.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was pictured at the IOF headquarters during the operation, underlying the gravity of the situation.
While Iranian media has initially downplayed the impact of the strikes, the full extent of the damage may not be known for some time.
The Pentagon has confirmed that the US was aware of Israel’s plans beforehand and that there was no US involvement in the operation. This stresses Washington’s delicate balancing act of preventing a wider conflict while supporting its ally Israel.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency vowed a “proportional reaction” to the Israeli strikes. The IOF has warned that any further escalation by Iran would be met with a forceful response.
