Rabat – Chariot Limited, a British energy company, provided an update on Wednesday regarding the ongoing drilling operations at its Anchois-3 well, part of the Lixus Offshore gas project located off the coast of Morocco.

According to a press release from Chariot, operations on the main wellbore are progressing as planned, with activities aligned to the company’s operational timeline.

The update marked a significant step in the company’s exploration efforts at the site, which has been under scrutiny for its potential to bolster Morocco’s growing energy sector.

The company, which holds a 30% interest in the license, operates alongside Energean (45%) and Morocco’s Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines (ONHYM), which holds a 25% stake.

Preliminary data from the Anchois-3 well has yielded promising indications, revealing the presence of gas reservoirs in the B sands — one of the key appraisal targets for the drilling campaign.

However, the company cautioned that further analysis will be needed to fully understand the scope and impact of these early findings.

“The presence of gas in the B sands is encouraging, but detailed work is required to assess the full potential,” Chariot said in its statement.

The company also noted that drilling will continue to probe deeper into the formation, seeking to evaluate additional exploration objectives below the current level.

The Anchois-3 well, located in the Lixus Offshore license, is a crucial part of Chariot’s broader strategy in Morocco.

The Lixus license is seen as a potentially lucrative gas field with the capacity to provide both domestic energy supplies and export opportunities, strengthening Morocco’s position as an emerging player in the global energy market.

Chariot emphasized that the main purpose of the pilot hole was to assess the up-dip exploration potential of the Anchois Footwall reservoirs. These reservoirs were encountered during the drilling process but were found to primarily contain water.

After evaluating the data, the company decided to plug and abandon the pilot hole before commencing work on the main wellbore.

Chariot’s ongoing exploration efforts come amid heightened interest in North Africa’s offshore gas potential. Morocco’s stable political environment and its strategic location near Europe make it an attractive destination for international energy investments.

With Europe searching for alternative energy sources to reduce reliance on Russian gas, projects like Anchois have gained attention for their potential to contribute to regional energy security.

This project is part of Morocco’s broader push to develop its energy resources and reduce its dependence on energy imports.
