Rabat – In an appeal for peace and diplomacy, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has concluded this week’s meeting with a call for the peaceful settlement of conflicts across its member states. This statement, dubbed the Yaoundé Declaration, emerged from this week’s OIC conference held in Cameroon, which brought together representatives from member countries.
This week’s 50th OIC Council of Foreign Ministers took place in Yaoundé, Cameroon, with a focus on the development of transport and communications infrastructure, as a means to combat poverty and insecurity.
The OIC declaration emphasized the necessity for dialogue and diplomatic engagement in resolving ongoing conflicts, including those in Palestine, Yemen, Syria, and Sudan. The OIC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international efforts that promote stability and security while upholding the rights and sovereignty of its member nations.
During the conference, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was a significant point of discussion. The United Arab Emirates highlighted the dire situation faced by Palestinians, calling for increased international aid and support. The OIC urged member states and international partners to step up humanitarian assistance and ensure that aid reaches those most in need. Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yılmaz called for accountability for human rights violations by Israel
The conference also brought attention to the ongoing conflicts in Yemen and Sudan. The OIC reiterated its support for a negotiated settlement in Yemen, encouraging all parties to participate in peace talks to end the conflict that has caused widespread suffering and displacement.
Regarding Sudan, the OIC expressed concern over the recent developments and called for a return to constitutional order. The organization emphasized the need for inclusive dialogue and political reconciliation to stabilize the country and pave the way for sustainable peace.
The Yaoundé Declaration aimed to reflect the OIC’s commitment to fostering unity and cooperation among its member states, with OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha highlighting the importance of collective action.
