ALGIERS, February 29, 2012 (AFP)

Algeria and China called for an immediate end Wednesday to the violence in Syria, as Syrian troops attacked a rebel-held district of Homs after shelling it for 26 straight days.

The foreign ministers of the two countries, Mourad Medelci and Yang Jiechi, agreed in a telephone conversation on the “need to reach an immediate cessation of all violence” in the country, Algerian foreign ministry spokesman Amar Belani said.

The conversation came at the request of the Chinese minister, APS news agency quoted the spokesman as saying.

The two ministers also discussed how a “national political dialogue can be launched between all the parties involved” so a lasting and peaceful solution can be found without foreign meddling.

Such a solution should be based “on the free choice of the Syrian people and respect Syria’s unity and sovereignty”, Belani said.

Yang has told Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi that international humanitarian aid should be allowed into Syria, Chinese state media said
earlier.

China and Russia have blocked attempts by the Security Council to adopt a resolution on Syria, where monitors estimate that more than 7,600 people have been killed since a crackdown on anti-government protesters began.
