Marrakech – Hailing from Casablanca, Reem El Haouat, the creative force behind Orizigh Designs, isn’t just another designer, she’s a cultural curator.

El Haouat, a Moroccan interior designer with an eye for elegance, has just turned West Ridge, Chicago into a vibrant tribute to her homeland.

With help from family friends, she’s tapped into Morocco’s best-kept secret: the artistry of Indigenous craftworkers.

Her new decor and gift shop is more than just a store; it’s a carefully curated journey through Morocco, right in the heart of Chicago.

The shop’s name, Orizigh Designs, blends the words “oriental” and “Amazigh.”

The shop itself is an ode to the Amazigh people, who have been a cornerstone of North African culture for thousands of years.

“They are the creators of everything that’s in here. They created everything by hand, and I always want to include them in my brand because they have a very interesting history,” El Haouat shared in an interview with outlet Block Club Chicago.

The designers journey to the Windy City

El Haouat’s journey from Casablanca to Chicago has come full circle with the grand opening of “Orizigh Designs.”

After studying fine art and interior design in Malaysia and Italy, El Haouat finally settled in the “Windy City” two years ago.

El Haouat’s father, a restaurant entrepreneur, inspired her to venture into business herself.

Starting from scratch has been a leap of faith for her and her family, accompanied by its share of challenges. Fortunately, she’s received support from friends in Morocco who have lent a helping hand along the way.

Her new venture not only merges her artistic passions but also introduces Chicago to the rich tapestry of traditional Moroccan craftsmanship.

The proud Edgewater resident shared in her interview the importance of preserving the craftsman story. What I enjoy most about this business is just educating people about the process of how everything is made because it’s very unique.”

She added that customers are getting a one-of-a-kind item that no one else in Chicago has, since each piece reflects a centuries-old process, making every purchase a truly exclusive experience.

Orizigh’s storefront, once a dance studio, now showcases a variety of one-of-a-kind Moroccan treasures, from rugs, furniture and decor to light fixtures and ceramics. All authentic hand-made items are sourced directly from Morocco.

A mounted television on the wall features videos of artisans weaving hand-knotted rugs and dyeing fabric, reflecting El Haouat’s commitment to highlighting the origins and collaborative processes behind her inventory.

Currently open by appointment only, the shop plans to extend its hours soon.

El Haouat envisions hosting cultural events in the future to educate people about the craftsmanship and the artisans behind each unique piece.
