Rabat – Israel followed the steps of their close ally the United States in boycotting the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), deciding to no longer participate in the UN body.

The US made their withdrawal earlier this month.

Gideon Saar, Israel’s Foreign Minister, wrote today on X that “Israel welcomes President (Donald) Trump’s decision not to participate in the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).”

The minister continued that Israel “joins the United States and will not participate in the UNHRC,” accusing the international body of anti-Semitism.

In response, Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory, described the move as “extremely serious.”

She said that Israel’s withdrawal from the UNHRC reflects its claimed “self-righteousness that they have nothing wrong to be held accountable for,” showing their “hubris and the lack of realization of what they [Israel] have done.”

Israel’s decision seems to be an attempt to prevent the international community from holding it accountable for its heinous war crimes in Gaza.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November 2024 accusing Prime Minister Netanyahu and Israel’s Former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant of war crimes against humanity.

The UNHCR withdrawal comes after Israel waged 15 months of genocide on the Gaza enclave, killing and displacing thousands.

The number of Palestinians killed because of Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) assaults mounted to over 61,000, as medics and rescue teams are uncovering more dead bodies buried under the rubble.

The world is still in shock following US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to “take over” Gaza and displace all Palestinians living there, planning to forcibly relocate them to several countries in the region. Analysts are warning that his words threaten ethnic cleansing, and the plot has garnered widespread condemnation.

Albares commented on Trump’s proposal, saying he “is destroying the basic principles of respect for human rights across a huge spectrum, not just in Palestine… We have moved further towards the abyss.”

This week’s developments shatter the hopes of Palestinians, as well as people around the world, to bring back the quality of life they used to have.
