Rabat – Moroccan authorities have launched an emergency response plan to assist citizens affected by the ongoing cold wave in several regions of the country.

The Ministry of the Interior announced that all relevant ministries, administrations, and agencies are working together to provide support following instructions from King Mohammed VI.

Local officials, including governors and regional leaders, were instructed to monitor the situation closely, coordinate interventions, and take necessary preventive measures, according to the statement.

As part of these efforts, authorities activated a command and alert center at the Ministry of the Interior, alongside regional and local monitoring committees.

This winter’s national response plan, which includes new updates, targets over 872,000 residents in 2,014 remote villages across 241 municipalities in 28 provinces.

The plan has expanded to include 185 additional villages this year, with the ministry saying it places special focus on areas recently affected by earthquakes and floods.

Key measures in the emergency plan include ensuring regular and sufficient supplies of essential goods, including heating materials in the affected area, as well as deploying machinery near roads at risk of closure to maintain access.

Also part of the initiative, authorities are distributing food, blankets, and firewood to affected families, and assisting livestock owners by providing animal feed.

Authorities are also organizing rescue operations for those in urgent need and ensuring that roads are maintained and phone networks connected in impacted areas.

The ministry reiterated that authorities at both national and local levels are fully mobilized to address potential challenges caused by the harsh weather, as part of its commitment to safeguard citizens and their properties while ensuring their basic needs are met.
