Rabat – Police in Morocco’s northern city of Tetouan have opened an investigation into a disturbing case of physical violence against a woman and her daughter.
A video captured a violent disturbing scene, in which a man – reportedly in his 80s – assaulted a woman and her daughter.
The disturbing footage shows the two having an altercation on stairs at a local neighborhood in Tetouan surrounded by residences.
The altercation escalated into full violence when the man attacked the woman with a stick while her child clung to her, visibly scared by the situation.
He also pushed the child, aged around two or three years old, with his foot down the stairs.
The video also showed the man choking the victim before a neighbor intervened to save the woman from further physical assault.
Several reports claim the old man assaulted the woman due to a delay in rent payment.
Police interacted with the case, opening an investigation after the woman filed a complaint against the man.
The violent case sparked uproar, with many calling for severe punishment for the man involved.
Others took issue with the person behind the camera who documented the case without intervening to help the woman.
Several reports have raised alarm across Morocco about the importance of implementing measures to tackle violence against women.
The High Commission of Planning (HCP) shared in 2020 a report that assessed violence against women based on a study carried out between 2009 and 2019.
The rate of violence against women between 18 and 64 decreased to 57% in 2019 compared to 63% in 2009.
Psychological violence against women dropped from 58% in 2009 to 49% in 2019. Physical violence decreased from 15% to 13% during the same period, the report added.
In rural areas, however, physical violence against women increased from 9% to 13% during the same period.
