Rabat — The draw for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has placed Morocco in Group A alongside hosts Kenya, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia.
The Atlas Lions are favorites to win the title after lifting it twice in 2018 and 2020, but the journey won’t be smooth sailing. Here is what you need to know about each opponent Morocco stands to take on in the group stage:
Kenya
Kenya is making its debut at the CHAN. The team is fired up to make the most of their home advantage playing in front of their crowd, with star players including Ryan Ogam, the top scorer in the Kenyan Premier League, and the creative midfielder Austine Odhiambo. This is the first time Harambee Stars have participated in the CHAN, but don’t underestimate them.
DR Congo
The Congolese have won CHAN twice in 2009 and 2016 and enter the competition willing to reclaim the title. After a tough start in qualification, which saw them draw 1-1 to Chad in the first leg, only to secure their spot in the finals with a 3-1 win at home. DR Congo boasts powerful players in their squad under the guidance of coach Otis N’goma including Oscar Kabwit leading the attack. So, the Congolese are a team to watch out for.
Zambia
The Chipolopolo are a familiar face at the CHAN having qualified five times before. Zambia has never won the competition though. Their best performance came in 2009 when they finished third. Coach Wedson Nyirenda has a wealth of experience, and captain Kabaso Chongo will lead the team with his defensive expertise. Zambia had it quite easy qualifying for the CHAN, with a walkover after Mozambique withdrew. Zambia will have a chance to improve on their past CHAN campaigns.
Angola
Angola enters their fifth CHAN with plenty of experience, having previously finished fourth in 2011 and 2018. Under coach Pedro Gonçalves, Angola is in good form and ready to go all the way to the finish line. The Sable Antelopes secured their spot after overcoming Lesotho in the qualification rounds.
Despite being favorites in Group A, Morocco won’t have it easy. DR Congo, Zambia, and Angola all stand as tough opponents. Morocco is likely to call up a youthful squad made up mainly of U24 players from the Botola Pro.
The competition is set to kick-off next August, but the CAF has still not announced the start date.
